Frequently Asked Questions About Aircraft Starters

If you have questions about aircraft starters, check out the answers to some of our most commonly asked questions below.

What Are the Parts of an Aircraft Starter?

An aircraft starter comprises many mechanical components, each of which plays an essential part in starting an airplane engine. Some of the key parts of an airplane starter are:

  • Battery - Used to power the starter
  • Flywheel - A heavy, metal disc attached to the flange of the engine's crankshaft
  • Magnetos — High-voltage, self-contained generators used in modern general aviation aircraft starters
  • Spark plugs — Used to ignite the fuel and air mixture inside the engine's cylinders
  • Starter adapter — Device similar to a clutch used as part of the starter system

How Does an Aircraft Starter Work?

The process of starting an aircraft engine is different than the process you go through when you start your car in the morning. An aircraft engine requires a boost to get going, and in most aircraft, an aircraft starter does the trick.

  1. A small gear attached to the starter engages the flywheel, which begins the process.
  2. The flywheel turns the crankshaft, forcing the pistons to drive up and down.
  3. The magnetos begin spinning, generating a powerful current that travels to the spark plugs.
  4. After the spark plugs ignite a mixture of fuel and air in the cylinders, the engine starts and your aircraft is ready to go.

What is the Weight of a Starter in an Airplane?

The weight of an airplane starter can vary greatly depending on the size of the engine and the type of motor. Typically, an aircraft starter will weigh between 5 and 20 pounds.

Continental Aerospace Technologies - Engine Break-In Instructions

When helping our customers purchase Continental aircraft engines, aircraft cylinders and speaking with those having their engine overhauled, we always return to Continental Manual M-0 for advice. While there are hundreds of break in opinions online and through the many shops in the country, we always stick to factory guidance and refer back to M-0. You should always print off a copy of M-0 (Section 7) before flying your aircraft with a new, rebuilt engine or fresh cylinders.
